Getting to Denman and Hornby Islands from centres on Vancouver Island has been made more accessible with the Island Highway to Courtenay and Campbell River. The drive from the beautiful provincial capitol of Victoria takes approximately 2 1/2 hours. From Vancouver there are two ferry routes that take you to Nanaimo. From Tsawwassen the ferry travels to Duke Point (south Nanaimo) in approximately 2 hours. The ferry leaving Horseshoe Bay takes approximately 1.5 hours and arrives at the ferry terminal in Downtown Nanaimo (Departure Bay). Traveling from Nanaimo to the the Buckley Bay ferry terminal (Denman Island ferry) takes about 1 hour by vehicle. If you decide to walk on the ferry RE/MAX The Islands would be pleased to pick you at the terminal on Denman Island and take you on your Island adventure.
By Air
The expansion of the Comox Airport has permitted more frequent air travel to this destination and from additional locations. Travelers can now arrive in Comox from Calgary or Edmonton on direct flights in 1.5 hours. RE/MAX The Islands will pick you up at the terminal and provide you with a tour of Denman and Hornby Islands and their spectacular properties.
If you decide to bring your own vehicle...
Once you have arrived safely in Buckley Bay (located 20km/13 miles south of Courtenay), a wonderful 10-minute ferry ride takes you to Denman Island. Be sure to get out of your vehicle and observe the ocean and skies for signs of wildlife. It is not uncommon to see sea lions and bald eagles during the crossing.
If Hornby is your final destination, a 15-minute drive across Denman Island will get you to Gravelly Bay where you take another short ferry trip to Hornby Island. Once again, watch for wildlife in the Lambert Channel. It's possible to see sea lions and even Orca whales on your way to Hornby.
Fares for both Denman and Hornby Island ferry service can be paid at the Buckley Bay terminal on Vancouver Island, where cash, and credit cards are accepted.The Hornby Island ferry crew can also collect fares, but only cash or travelers cheques are accepted as payment. (TIP: If you are planning to return to the islands with some frequency, consider purchasing a booklet of tickets at a significant discount.)
